A scheduled Army Corps of Engineers whitewater release puts up to 1,000 cfs into the North Branch of the Potomac. With West Virginia on river left and Maryland on river right we'll paddle 6.1 miles from the Barnum Whitewater to Bloomington while dropping 30 feet per mile. Wave trains, holes and ledge drops provide plenty of surfing opportunities. The water comes from the bottom of the Jennings Randolph dam at a refreshing 50-55 degrees, so be be prepared for cold water. Primitive camping is available along the river near the put-in at Barnum or at the Army Corps campground above the Jennings Randolph dam.
