Campaign Pay It Forward - Kayaking Wilderness First Aid

Campaign Pay It Forward - Kayaking Wilderness First Aid

  • Keel-Haulers Canoe Club (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Campaign Pay It Forward is holding a Kayaking Wilderness First Aid Course

https://campaignpayitforward.enrollware.com/enroll...

We have the first-ever in the nation kayaking wilderness first aid geared toward kayakers that do not usually backpack. The course is taught by a certified WEMT and also a long-time paddler. The course covers common injuries related to paddling and how to treat them until advanced medical personnel arrives.

Accidents happen. People get hurt, sick, or lost. The temperature drops, the wind picks up, and it starts to rain. Would you know what to do? Many backcountry emergencies are preventable, and even when bad things happen, sometimes the wrong care can make things worse. By learning a few basic skills, you can distinguish between a good outcome and a bad one and maybe even save a life. We immerse participants through lectures and hands-on scenarios. If you want to “talk” about Wilderness First Aid, this class is not for you. All scout wilderness first aid courses are taught by currently registered adult scout leaders with years of experience and are currently active duty emergency medical providers themselves!

The Wilderness First Aid course is perfect for the outdoor enthusiast or trip leader who wants a basic level of first aid training for short trips with family, friends, and outdoor groups. All scouting organizations approve our Wilderness First Aid course with a unique American Red Cross QR code that you can verify on the Red Cross website.

Wilderness First Aid course is 16 hours long (two days). It focuses on the basic skills of Response and Assessment, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Environmental Emergencies, Survival Skills, Soft Tissue Injuries, and Medical Emergencies. We go into depth about stabilization and treatment for backcountry injuries.

Cancelation Policy

A student can cancel class enrollment 15 days before the start of the class without penalty; if a cancellation occurs after this, the following amounts are deducted from the original payment:
10% from 8 to 14 days before class starts;
25% from 3 to 7 days before class starts;
50% from 1 to 2 days before class starts;
100% from 0 to 0 days before class starts or 1 day after class starts

Open Water Rescue Training

6:00 PM18:00

Open Water Rescue Training

  • Emerald Necklace Marina Boat Launch (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join us for open-water (Lake Erie) rescues and self-reliance drills! This training is for entry-level to advanced paddlers and takes place on flatwater (calm lake and river conditions) and open-water (Lake Erie conditions with wind and waves). We are peer-led and friendly advice is encouraged. As long as you arrive with the proper equipment, we invite all paddlers, including novices, to join us.

Where: Emerald Necklace Marina Boat Launch (you can search 41 North Coastal Adventures on google maps). We will drop off our kayaks in the green space across the road from the 41 North Coastal Adventures Rental Center.

When: 6:00PM ON-WATER TIME (due to daylight). We will always meet and discuss the plan and make introductions prior to launching. Typical duration is 2-3 hrs on water.

CONDITIONS FOR CANCELLATION: These trainings are weather dependent. If Lake Erie is too rough, or the level of experience in the group cannot match the conditions, we may cancel the event. Please check facebook for that notice or check in with the organizer listed below.

Gear: All paddlers should come with a craft with proper floatation. This is either sealed bulkheads front and rear, or float bags that take up a LIBERAL amount of space in their kayak. Recreational kayaks with only one or no bulkheads would NOT be appropriate for this training. In the event you cannot borrow an appropriate kayak, we can rent you one at 41 North Coastal Adventures for the standard rental fee and waiver signed.

- The ideal and safest craft for this training is a touring kayak (sea kayak) with deck lines.

- PFD's (life jacket) to be worn at ALL times during training.

- Bring a bilge pump to help get water out of your kayak and others.

- Consider bringing a spare 2-piece paddle for simulated rescue scenarios.

- Bring a light! The U.S. Coast Guard requires a kayaker to display a single, steady white light as tall as possible on a kayak and visible from 360 degrees. We may be paddling back at dusk.

- Bring ALL the safety equipment you own! This is your chance to try it out and see if it works in scenario-based learning. Examples include: tow belt, paddle float, marine radio, throw bag, contact-tow line, etc.

- Snacks and water are a must - you'll be working hard if you choose to participate in all rescue scenarios.

Any questions can be directed to the organizer, Josh Scott, at josh.scott.contact@gmail.com or TEXT PLEASE at 440-465-4654.
