About the course:

Whitewater diligence is as much about preventing accidents as it is knowing what to do when  rescue becomes necessary. Our Common Sense Rescue class will put you through the paces of not only fundamental rescue and safety skills, but how to prevent these scenarios from popping up while on the river. Safety is just as much about proactivity and prevention through common sense as it is technical knowledge and clarity under pressure.

Familiarize yourself with in-water comfort, gear and equipment, boat-based rescue, quick and easy rope systems, and more as every Swiftwater skill will fall into context for the common paddler. Gain comfort moving in and around the riverbed and begin to think preemptively regarding risk and consequence, and a whole new world of whitewater will unfold.

This class will uncover the power and gravity of the river and just how large a part you can play as a boater and leader while on the water.

Jeff Prycl's Loyalhanna Clinic 2025

  • Latrobe Municipal Authority (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This is a whitewater clinic for beginners or for anyone who needs skills practice or needs a skills tuneup.

The only requirements are that you already know how to wet exit and that you come dressed for immersion.

The Loyalhanna is a class II creek and at the end of the clinic, you learn how to run Kingston Dam.

Annual Loyalhanna Clinic is Sat 3-29 or Sun 3-30. Meeting by 8:30am. Depending on the temperature. Could possibly go to the following weekend if it is too cold. Preferred date is Sunday 3-30.

This a clinic that has been going on for 30+ years suitable for whitewater canoes, kayaks with a wet exit out of roll classes or with previous kayak experience. It is also for kayakers who need a remedial course in the basics forgotten. It is also for good kayakers who are willing to safety boat and sheppard beginners down the river.

We meet at Kingston Dam in the Water Authority parking lot intersection of Rt 30 and Rt 217 just east of Latrobe.

Drysuits, dry tops, wet suits plenty of breathable underwear, booties for taking a swim in cold water. Experienced boats bring extra gear.

Bring a lunch for on the river, ziplock, drybag, ziplock sandwich bags. Something to drink. After clinic we will go to a great reasonable Mexican restaurant just up Rt 30 who can accommodate a big crowd.

What will you learn, How to plan a river trip, safety Experienced boaters bring your throw ropes, first aid kits. How to start learning a torso stroke, How to ferry, how to boat scout and learn how to read water, This is a class not a bomb down the river, It usually takes 6-7hours. How to run a shuttle, set safety cars. How to use peripheral vision and only look where you are going. Plus much more,

Explore Long Lake

Long Lake is the lowest of the Portage Lakes and includes the Portage Path Wildlife area, a hang out for eagles, herons, hawks and numerous migratory birds. The Tuscawarus River flows into Long Lake, taking a break before flowing through flood gates on the lake and heading south to Barberton and Canal Fulton. Long Lake is also fed by a spillway from East Reservoir on the the Portage Lakes. Among the many areas to explore are the marsh in the Wildlife area, the channel to the spillway and some areas where mink and otters have been spotted. The plan is to meet at 10 a.m. at the DNR boat ramp on Cove Boulevard off off Manchester Road, launching by 10:30. Water will be cold. Dry wear is advised and a PFD is a must. I have a few sea kayaks available for use. Contact me early if you want to use one. I live at the end of Cove Blvd., so everyone is welcome to hang out by the lake at my house after the paddle.

Kayaking Wilderness First Aid - Campaign Pay It Forward 2025

to Mar 9

Kayaking Wilderness First Aid - Campaign Pay It Forward 2025

Campaign Pay It Forward is holding a Kayaking Wilderness First Aid Course

https://campaignpayitforward.enrollware.com/enroll?id=11013703

Note: Camping is available pay in cash $10 per person per night. Bathrooms will be open in the lodge but no showers.

We have the first-ever in the nation kayaking wilderness first aid geared toward kayakers that do not usually backpack.  The course is taught by a certified WFR and also a long-time paddler.  The course covers common injuries related to paddling and how to treat them until advanced medical personnel arrives.

Accidents happen. People get hurt, sick, or lost. The temperature drops, the wind picks up, and it starts to rain. Would you know what to do? Many backcountry emergencies are preventable, and even when bad things happen, sometimes the wrong care can make things worse. By learning a few basic skills, you can distinguish between a good outcome and a bad one and maybe even save a life. We immerse participants through lectures and hands-on scenarios. If you want to “talk” about Wilderness First Aid, this class is not for you.  All scout wilderness first aid courses are taught by currently registered adult scout leaders with years of experience and are currently active duty emergency medical providers themselves!

The Wilderness First Aid course is perfect for the outdoor enthusiast or trip leader who wants a basic level of first aid training for short trips with family, friends, and outdoor groups. All scouting organizations approve our Wilderness First Aid course with a unique American Red Cross QR code that you can verify on the Red Cross website.

Wilderness First Aid course is 16 hours long (two days). It focuses on the basic skills of Response and Assessment, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Environmental Emergencies, Survival Skills, Soft Tissue Injuries, and Medical Emergencies.  We go into depth about stabilization and treatment for backcountry injuries.

Cancelation Policy

A student can cancel class enrollment 15 days before the start of the class without penalty; if a cancellation occurs after this, the following amounts are deducted from the original payment:
10% from 8 to 14 days before class starts;
25% from 3 to 7 days before class starts;
50% from 1 to 2 days before class starts;
100% from 0 to 0 days before class starts or 1 day after class starts

Campaign Pay It Forward is holding a Kayaking Wilderness First Aid Course

https://campaignpayitforward.enrollware.com/enroll...

We have the first-ever in the nation kayaking wilderness first aid geared toward kayakers that do not usually backpack. The course is taught by a certified WEMT and also a long-time paddler.
